Reading Time: 2 minutes

Having attended both the Johannesburg and the Cape Town iterations of the Blockchain Africa 2019 Conference, I made sure I chatted with as many “movers and shakers” in the industry as possible.

In only 3 days I racked up a total of 19 interviews. So get ready to be inspired, educated, and informed about where the industry is headed on the African continent and beyond. And with the likes of Hyperledger’s Brian Behlendorf and Malta’s JP Fabri, there is some pure gold to look forward to.

We won’t be gushing all 19 interviews out in one go, we’ll be drip feeding them to you twice a week, starting today, and continuing on Tuesday morning. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel and Podcast Page for pre-announced uploads, though.

Today we bring you arguably the most important. Interviews with high-level Government Officials of the Western Cape Province: Premier Helen Zille, and Minister of Economic Opportunities, Beverley Schäfer.

Premier Helen Zille

In her keynote address at the Cape Town conference, Premier Zille outlined the remarkable innovation that Blockchain is, and its opportunity to eradicate corruption and even drive economic growth.

In the interview, I asked Premier Zille about how she first came to hear about Blockchain, and how her Provincial Government could potentially see it implemented into their administration.

Beverley Schäfer, Minister of Economic Opportunities, Tourism & Agriculture

Minister Schäfer is behind the Western Cape’s rise to the top of South Africa’s “highest average income” list, and is passionate about economic development in the country. One of the key areas for economic development is of course in the Tech industry, and with Blockchain being such a prominent area of research & development, Minister Schäfer couldn’t turn down such an opportunity to be a keynote speaker at the conference.

I caught up with The Minister after her address, in which she highlights the need for innovative tech like Blockchain, and the need to support Tech-centred entrepreneurship in the Western Cape.
