FNB has entered South Africa’s retail crypto market, giving nearly 9 million customers access to digital asset trading through its existing investment platform. The bank launched the service in partnership with South African crypto exchange VALR, allowing customers to buy and sell selected cryptocurrencies without leaving the FNB ecosystem.
FNB Brings Crypto Trading to Nearly 9 Million Customers
First National Bank’s new Crypto Investing feature gives customers exposure to five digital assets: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, Solana (SOL), and Tether’s USDT stablecoin. The service is integrated into FNB’s existing Share Saver, Share Builder, Share Investor and Share Zero investment products.
The launch significantly lowers the barrier for South African bank customers who want to invest in cryptocurrency. FNB says customers can start trading from as little as R10, while the service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, matching the always-on nature of cryptocurrency markets.
FNB customers can fund their crypto purchases directly from their bank accounts, removing the need to open a separate exchange account or transfer money to an external trading platform. The partnership with VALR provides the cryptocurrency infrastructure behind the new offering.
Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and USDT Available
The initial cryptocurrency lineup covers some of the largest and most established digital assets by market presence. Bitcoin and Ethereum provide exposure to the two largest crypto networks, while XRP and Solana give customers access to major alternative blockchain ecosystems. USDT adds a dollar pegged stablecoin to the available investment options.
However, FNB is taking a controlled approach to cryptocurrency custody. Assets purchased through the platform remain ring fenced inside the FNB ecosystem, meaning customers cannot transfer their crypto holdings to an external wallet or another exchange. The bank says the restriction supports security, compliance and South African exchange control requirements.
The bank also plans to expand its cryptocurrency offering over time and provide educational material to help customers understand digital assets, market volatility and the risks associated with crypto investing.
South African Banks Accelerate Crypto Adoption
FNB’s move highlights the growing integration of cryptocurrency into South Africa’s traditional financial system. Discovery Bank previously entered the retail crypto market through its partnership with Luno, while other major banks have pursued digital asset custody, stablecoins, blockchain payments and settlement infrastructure.
South Africa already has a substantial cryptocurrency user base. Data from the South African Reserve Bank showed about 7.8 million registered crypto customers in 2025, while crypto assets held in custody at major local platforms reached roughly R25.2 billion at the end of 2024. Bitcoin, XRP, Ethereum and Solana accounted for significant portions of those holdings.
By bringing cryptocurrency trading directly into a major bank’s investment platform, FNB could expose digital assets to millions of customers who may never have used a dedicated crypto exchange. The development also signals a broader shift in South Africa, where established financial institutions are increasingly building regulated and controlled pathways into the digital asset economy.
