In a fresh blow to the Web3 gaming sector, crypto gaming studio Uncharted has announced it will cease operations and shut down its flagship title Fishing Frenzy, underscoring the ongoing struggle to build sustainable blockchain-based games.
The browser-based fishing RPG, built on the Ronin Network, had attracted hundreds of thousands of players with its relaxed gameplay and progression systems inspired by popular indie titles. Featuring guild mechanics, boss encounters, and a native token economy built around $FISH, the game managed to appeal to both casual players and more dedicated crypto-native users.
Despite early traction, the studio confirmed that servers will go offline on June 25 at 2:00 AM UTC. Trading of in-game assets and bundles has already been halted.
Transparent Wind Down Highlights Industry Tension
Uncharted’s exit has drawn attention for its transparency and efforts to compensate its community. The studio distributed over $62,000 in USDC to players and stakers based on internal engagement metrics, while also refunding more than $7,000 in purchases. Portions of the game’s assets and data have been open sourced.
Co-founder Derek Lau pointed to a persistent issue within crypto gaming. While Fishing Frenzy delivered an enjoyable experience, many users remained focused on extracting financial value rather than engaging with gameplay itself. This imbalance made it difficult to sustain the project despite multiple attempts to refine its model, including ad-supported rewards and risk-based earning mechanics.
